How to Choose Digital Multimeters
Four decisions narrow this list to two or three models.
- Voltage and safety rating: the VC83x models (VC833A, VC835B, VC837, VC836) measures to 600V and is rated CAT III 300V, which suits electronics repair and household circuits. For distribution boards and industrial panels, pick a CAT III 600V model that reads 1000V DC, such as VC86, VC97A, VC99 or VC746A.
- Display resolution: 2000 counts (VC86, VC732A) is enough for mains and battery checks. 6000 counts (VC837, VC99) gives one more digit on low voltages. For component work, VC9807A+ shows 20000 counts with DCV accuracy of ±(0.1%+5), and the mains powered VC8045 bench meter reaches ±(0.05%+1).
- Ranging style: VC836 measures with one key and no dial changes. VC97A, VC99 and VC88 offer both auto and manual range, useful when an auto range meter keeps hunting on a drifting signal. Manual models such as VC890D and VC9802A+ are listed under manual range multimeters.
- Special functions: VC87 has a VSD mode for variable frequency drive outputs, VC88 tests TTL/CMOS logic levels, VC746A adds a live contact voltage test, and VC890C measures temperature to 1000℃. If you only need NCV and a torch on a 600V meter, see the auto range multimeters.
