Megohmmeters and Insulation Resistance Testers
An insulation resistance tester, also called a megohmmeter, applies a high DC test voltage to cables, motors and electrical equipment and measures the leakage resistance in megohms. Vicimeter insulation multimeters combine this test with standard multimeter functions, and several models add polarization index (PI) and dielectric absorption ratio (DAR) for insulation diagnosis.

How to Choose Insulation Testers
Choose by test voltage first, then by how high a reading you need and how you will hold the probes.
- Test voltage: match it to the rated voltage of the equipment and to the procedure you follow. VC4060AT and VC1508AT step through 250V, 500V and 1000V for low voltage cables and motors. VC4060B+ and VC1508B+ offer 500V and 1000V. VC4060PC starts at 50V for telecom and control wiring, and VC4060PD and VC1508PD go up to 2500V.
- Upper resistance limit: healthy insulation on new cable often reads above the meter's ceiling. VC60B+ reads to 2GΩ, the VC4060A/B/AT/B+ models to 20GΩ at 1000V, and the 2500V models to 50GΩ. A higher ceiling lets you see a slow decline over years before it becomes a fault.
- PI and DAR: only the PC and PD versions (VC4060PC, VC4060PD, VC1508PC, VC1508PD) calculate these ratios, so pick one of them for motor and transformer trend records.
- One-handed operation: the VC1508 series comes with a remote control test lead, so you can start the test at the probe while the other hand holds the second clip. This helps on ladders and inside cabinets.
- Dedicated tester or insulation multimeter: VC60B+ is a simple megohmmeter with a high voltage alarm. The insulation multimeters add current to 20A, capacitance and temperature, and VC4060B and VC4060B+ also measure inductance to 100H.
