LCR Meters: Handheld Capacitance and Inductance Meters
LCR meters measure inductance (L), capacitance (C) and resistance (R) of components, which a standard multimeter measures poorly or not at all. Handheld models are used for incoming inspection, repair and sorting of capacitors, inductors and transformers.

How to Choose LCR Meters
The right meter depends on which quantities you measure and how small or large the parts are.
- Capacitance only, or L and C: VC6013 and VC6013A measure capacitance only. VC6243+ adds inductance from 2mH to 20H. DM4070 covers inductance, capacitance and resistance, so it is the one to choose if you also sort resistors or check winding resistance.
- Smallest values: small inductors in switch mode power supplies are often below 2mH, which only DM4070 reaches with its 200μH range. For capacitors below 2nF, use a model with a 200pF range: VC6013, VC6013A or DM4070.
- Largest capacitance: VC6013 reads to 20mF and VC6013A to 200mF, which covers large electrolytic banks. VC6243+ and DM4070 stop at 2000μF.
- Accuracy: the VC6013 pair has a basic capacitance accuracy of ±(0.5%+1), against ±(2.0%+5) for DM4070 and ±(2.5%+5) for VC6243+. For grading capacitors into tolerance bins, the VC6013 models are the better fit.
- Handling charged parts: VC6013, VC6243+ and DM4070 discharge the capacitor automatically, but you should still discharge large capacitors before connecting them. If you only need an occasional inductance reading, the VC9808+ multimeter measures 2mH to 20H; other meters are on the digital multimeters page.
