How to Choose Other Instruments
These instruments do unrelated jobs, so the questions differ by type.
- Voltage tester pen: AC-3 and AC-4 switch between 48 to 1000V and a more sensitive 12 to 1000V setting; AC-4 adds an LCD bar for live wire identification and can locate a break in a cable. AC II detects 90 to 1000V and carries a torch. AC-1 is a screwdriver with a neon indicator. All pens are on the voltage tester pens page.
- Tachometer, contact or non-contact: photo and laser models read a reflective mark from a distance: DT-2234B at 50 to 250mm, DT-2234C and DT-6234C at 50 to 500mm. Contact models DT-2235B+ and DT-6235B also measure surface speed to 1999.9 m/min for belts and rollers. DT-2236C and DT-6236C do both.
- Tachometer memory and power: DT-6235B, DT-6236B and DT-6236C store 96 data sets, and the DT-6234 models can run from an external 6V supply. Compare all of them on the tachometers page.
- Phase rotation: VC850 checks positive, reverse and missing phase on 200 to 480V, 20 to 400Hz systems before you connect a motor or pump.
- Wood moisture: MD-2G uses 2 pins and reads 6 to 24%; MD-4G uses 4 pins and reads 5 to 40%, so it also covers freshly sawn timber. MCD-3003B1 detects a coin at 100mm and a 20mm steel pipe at 200mm.
