Clamp Meters: AC, AC/DC and True RMS Models
A clamp meter measures current by closing its jaw around a single conductor, so the circuit does not need to be opened. AC clamp meters read alternating current only, while AC/DC models also measure direct current for solar, battery and vehicle systems.

How to Choose Clamp Meters
Five specifications decide which clamp meter fits your work.
- AC only or AC/DC: if you will ever clamp a solar string, battery cable or DC motor lead, you need an AC/DC model: CM-2016, CM-2018, CM-3002, CM-2046 or CM-2056, all listed under AC/DC clamp meters. For building wiring and motors on mains, an AC model is enough.
- Maximum current: 400A (CM-2000D, CM-2000E), 600A (CM-2000B, DM201, DM203), 800A (CM-2007, DM202, CM-3000) or 1000A (CM-2030, CM-2070FT, CM-2046). Choose a range above the largest load current you expect, including motor starting current.
- Jaw opening: the CM-2000 and CM-3000 models open 28mm, the DM20 mini clamps 35mm, and the 1000A models 52mm. The jaw has to close fully around the thickest single conductor you will meet, so large feeder cables call for the 52mm jaw.
- True RMS: every CM-20xx and DM20x model here is True RMS, so readings stay correct on the distorted currents drawn by drives, LED lighting and switch mode power supplies.
- Extra functions: CM-2018 adds LoZ and low pass filter voltage modes for VFD work, CM-3000 and CM-3002 identify the measurement automatically on a color screen, CM-2007 and CM-2056 measure capacitance to 40mF plus frequency and temperature, and DM201 has a 20V battery test.
