How to Choose Digital Thermometers
After choosing between infrared and probe, four more points settle the model.
- Temperature range: infrared models top out at 380℃ (TM380), 500℃ (TM500A), 550℃ (TM550), 650℃ (TM650A) or 750℃ (TM750A). For furnaces, exhausts and molds above that, a K type probe on DM6801A+ reads -50℃ to 1300℃.
- Spot size and surface: all five infrared models have a 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio, so at 1.2m the measured spot is about 100mm across and the target must fill it. Shiny metal reflects heat and reads low; adjustable emissivity on every model helps, and TM650A and TM750A mark the measured area with a ring of laser points. The A models are IP54 for dusty sites.
- Channels and logging: DM6802A+ shows T1, T2 and T1-T2 for supply and return checks. DM6803A+ and DM6804A+ accept eight thermocouple types and store 6000 readings, and DM6803A+ adds a high/low alarm. More detail is on the thermocouple thermometers page.
- Food and cold storage: ST-9283 has a probe for -50℃ to 300℃ with a high/low alarm. For fridges and freezers, TM07A reads a probe on a 1m cable, and TM803 and TM804 show inside and probe temperature with an alarm. See refrigerator thermometers and infrared thermometers for the full lists.
