Electrical Safety Testers: Insulation, Milliohm, Earth

Electrical safety testers verify that installations and equipment are safe to operate. Insulation resistance testers check cable and motor insulation, milliohm meters measure contact and bonding resistance with the four-wire method, and earth resistance testers verify grounding systems.

How to Choose Electrical Safety Testers

Each of the three instruments here answers a different question, so start from the test you need to run.

  • Insulation: VC60B+ applies 250V, 500V or 1000V and reads up to 2GΩ, with an audible and visual high voltage alarm. If you need PI/DAR, 2500V or a meter that also measures current, compare the models on the insulation testers page.
  • Low resistance: VC480C+ uses four-wire (Kelvin) connection, so lead and contact resistance drop out of the reading. It resolves 0.01mΩ and reads to 2kΩ, with about 100mA test current on the 20mΩ range. Use it for busbar joints, bonding straps, switch contacts and motor windings, where a multimeter's resistance range cannot resolve milliohms. Test only de-energized circuits.
  • Earth resistance: VC4105A measures with the three-wire method to 2000Ω, using auxiliary spikes and an 820Hz test signal, or with the two-wire method where driving spikes is not possible. Measure earth voltage first (to 200V on the same meter); stray voltage on the electrode upsets the result.
  • Safety rating: VC60B+ and VC4105A are rated CAT II 600V and VC480C+ CAT III 50V. For live measurements at distribution boards, carry a CAT III 600V multimeter or one of the insulation multimeters as well.
